This slide depicts
the “odds” (likelihood) of developing heart disease, diabetes, pneumonia,
suicide, stroke, or dementia for mentally ill patients based upon exposure to
antidepressant (AD) or antipsychotic (AP) drugs.

Numerous
investigations, performed in a variety of age groups, have demonstrated the
potential of pharmaceuticals to accelerate the risks of disease and
death. Even when compared to similarly
diagnosed patients who have avoided antidepressant or antipsychotic drugs,
consumers of these medications have been two to fifteen times more likely to
attempt or complete suicide, and two to seven times more likely to develop
pneumonia, diabetes, heart disease, or stroke.

Equally important --
but seldom discussed by health care professionals – the use of antidepressant
or antipsychotic drugs has been repeatedly associated with a two- to
fourteen-fold higher likelihood of dementia.
