More than two years ago, Montana investigators received a trove of files pointing to possibly illegal coordination between candidates and a dark money group called Western Tradition Partnership. In a first for campaign-finance intrigue, the documents had been found in a meth house in Colorado. A federal grand jury subpoenaed the documents last December as part of an investigation into the group.
Former WTP official Christian LeFer and his wife, Allison LeFer, sued after stories about the documents appeared in Frontline and ProPublica, trying to get their papers back.
Yesterday a federal judge ruled in their case: The LeFers lost in almost every way possible.
